So grab your wellies, wrap up warm and get ready for some autumn adventures!
1. Enjoy a Free Halloween Trail at Willen Lake
Dates: Saturday 24 October – Sunday 1 November 2026 Time: 10am–4pm Cost: FREE Suitable for: Children under 8, including preschoolers
If you're looking for a fun Halloween activity that won't cost a penny, Willen Lake's Halloween Trail is a brilliant choice!
Little adventurers can collect a trail sheet from the Watersports Centre before setting off to help Wilbur complete a series of spooky challenges around the lake.
Once your child has completed the trail, simply return the sheet to collect a Halloween treat.
We particularly love this activity for preschool-aged children because it combines movement, problem-solving and plenty of fresh air.
Our Ducklings tip: Make the most of your visit by turning it into an autumn scavenger hunt! Encourage your child to find three colourful leaves, listen for birds singing or count how many ducks they can spot.

It's a wonderful opportunity to encourage curiosity about the natural world without spending a fortune.
At Ducklings, we're passionate about helping children learn through their surroundings. Exploring woodland environments allows little ones to develop their senses, build confidence and ask questions about the world around them.
Our Ducklings tip: Bring a small bag to collect fallen leaves for an autumn collage when you get home. Remind children to leave mushrooms, berries and other wildlife undisturbed.

Who says museums are just for grown-ups?
Milton Keynes Museum is getting into the Halloween spirit with a week of family-friendly activities.
Throughout half-term, children can enjoy Halloween crafts, spooky biscuit decorating and playful encounters with mysterious witches around the museum's historic Street of Shops.
Between 12pm and 2pm each day, the Black Sheep Collective will be bringing Halloween stories and characters to life.
The museum also offers plenty of opportunities for children to discover what life was like in the past.
Our Ducklings tip: Encourage your little one to talk about the things they see. Ask questions such as, "What do you think this was used for?" or "How is this different from what we have at home?"
Simple conversations like these are brilliant for supporting children's language development.

6. Make Your Own Autumn Adventure – Completely Free!
Not every family activity needs tickets, booking or a big budget.
Sometimes, the simplest adventures create the happiest memories.
Milton Keynes is fortunate to have plenty of beautiful parks, lakes and green spaces, making it easy to get outdoors with little ones.
Here are five easy autumn activities you can try together:
Go on a leaf hunt: See how many different colours, shapes and sizes of fallen leaves you can find.
Jump in muddy puddles: Put on waterproofs and wellies and let your little one splash away.
Create an autumn nature picture: Use fallen leaves and twigs to make a picture or collage.
Go birdwatching: Visit a local lake and count the ducks, geese or other birds you can see.
Try an autumn colour challenge: Can your child find something red, orange, yellow, brown and green?
You could explore Furzton Lake, Campbell Park or one of the many local green spaces throughout Milton Keynes.
Our Ducklings tip: Let your child lead the adventure. Young children often notice things adults walk straight past, whether that's an interesting leaf, a tiny insect or the sound of the wind in the trees.
7. Bring the Halloween Fun Home!
If the autumn weather isn't on your side, don't worry. There are plenty of ways to enjoy Halloween at home with your preschooler.
Here are a few of our favourite simple activities:
Pumpkin painting
Instead of carving pumpkins, let your child decorate a small pumpkin with washable paints, stickers or colourful shapes.
Spooky playdough
Make or use some orange playdough and add chunky, age-appropriate Halloween-themed cutters. It's fantastic for developing little hand muscles.
Halloween biscuit decorating
Use plain biscuits, icing and suitable decorations to create your own friendly ghosts or silly monsters.
Pumpkin sensory play
Explore the inside of a pumpkin together. Children can describe how it feels, count the seeds and talk about the different textures.
A Halloween story corner
Create a cosy reading space with blankets, cushions and a selection of not-too-scary Halloween books.
Remember to supervise young children throughout these activities and avoid small items that could pose a choking risk.
Why Are Autumn Activities So Good for Preschool Children?
At Ducklings Preschool, we believe that learning happens everywhere, not just inside the classroom.
Something as simple as exploring a woodland trail or decorating a pumpkin can help support several important areas of early childhood development.
Communication and language: Talking about colours, textures, sounds and experiences introduces children to new vocabulary.
Physical development: Walking, climbing, jumping and exploring different environments help develop balance, coordination and confidence.
Understanding the world: Discovering wildlife, observing seasonal changes and exploring natural materials encourages curiosity.
Expressive arts and design: Painting pumpkins, creating autumn pictures and imaginative Halloween play give children opportunities to be creative.
Personal, social and emotional development: Spending time together, trying new activities and meeting other children can help build independence and confidence.
Best of all, these experiences don't need to be expensive or complicated.
Sometimes, all it takes is a pair of wellies and a little imagination!
Enjoy October Half-Term with Your Little Ones!
Whether you're heading out for a Halloween trail, exploring the woodland or enjoying some messy play at home, we hope this guide has given you plenty of inspiration for October half-term in Milton Keynes.
